The Hog Shack was the first stop on the Dine Around Richmond’s Hidden Gems of Richmond Tour, hosted by Tourism Richmond. When you open the restaurant door, you are surrounded by the smells of smoking wood. When you leave, the sweet aroma will also stick to your clothing (a good sign?). However their menu offers a wide variety of foods that you may not find at a BBQ house – they may want to shrink the menu just a bit and focus on BBQ items. Their highlights are the craft beers, burnt ends, and flat line burger challenge.

Our menu included ribs, burnt ends (off-menu special), smoked spam, corn bread, baked beans, a flat line burger, and a pulled pork pancake (off-menu special). The corn bread was a little dry, but the baked beans were a favourite and full of flavour. A few of the craft beers that are great accompaniments to the BBQ foods include Kelowna Pilsner, Thirsty Beaver Ale, and Black Butte Porter.

The flat line burger is a double cheese burger sandwiched in between two grilled cheese sandwiches. The Hog Shack has started a challenge for people who can eat this burger AND the fries in 5 minutes. Checkout the Hog Shack’s You Tube Channel for those who have attempted and succeeded. Do you think you can do it??

Finally pictured above center are their famous BURNT ENDS, between ribs and smoked spam. Burnt ends are the tips of beef brisket which are double smoked in-house. They are not on the menu and they are only available about once a week. When they are available, the entree is $15.95 and comes with 2 sides. Follow the @hogshackca to find out when they are available and beat the crowd!
