Black + Blue

Guest Writer: Gloria T.

The long anticipated Black & Blue restaurant has finally opened! The swanky, modern, and warming atmosphere brings a new life to the city. From their cozy lounges to their more intimate private booths and rooms, this is a place to be if you are looking for a nice night out with friends and family.  The decor is quite  glamorous with a feeling that you are in a mansion.

In terms of their appetizers, the feature is on their Black & Blue mini (beef) burgers topped with a soft homemade bun. Other notable appetizers on their menu (dinner) are their creamy lobster bisque with a hint of mushroom, as well as their oysters which are topped with chopped spinach, butter, and hollandaise. The Mac and cheese in a fried batter that is dipped in a light creamy sauce. A favorite appetizer is the roasted beef on a homemade bun, with the beef being cooked for over 10 hours. It was extra tender and flavourful! The night ended with a mini sundae which was nice and smooth with a fruity taste topped with a candy crunch.

Gotham Steakhouse, Downtown Vancouver

I had the pleasure to have my New Years Eve dinner at Gothams and it was absolutely spectacular. I was blown away by the restaurant, the food, and the service. The great thing about downtown Vancouver restaurants, is that many of them offer cheap valet parking (under $10). You don’t have search for parking when it’s raining outside! I arrived back to Vancouver in the morning, after the airport lost my luggage, so I wasn’t a happy camper. BUT Gotham’s made my day and the dinner was a great way to end 2009.

Steak and lobster at Gotham's

We had the crab cakes and rockefeller oysters to start. The crab cakes were small, but they were 75% crab meat. I’ve never had rockefeller oysters before and they were amazing, but very filling. You get half a dozen small oysters cooked with a creamed spinach topping. One appetizer would have been enough. We decided to go-all-out and celebrate the end of 2009 – we got the New York steak and lobster (in the picture above with the sides) and the porterhouse steak. The steak literally melted in my mouth. I never had steak like this before. The lobster came in the tail, but was removed at the table. The porterhouse was good, because you can taste the quality of how the meat was aged. We also had mashed potatoes and onion rings as sides. It was way too much food, but it was all good and I had no complaints. Even though we were super full, we had to finish off our meal with the belgian chocolate bourbon cake.
