Hapa Izakaya: True Jap Fusion Cuisine

We were in the Kitsilano area recently and we decided to drop by Hapa. I tried the one on Robson when we first moved here, but not this one. I was very impressed with this Japanese tapas restaurant. Vancouver is HUGE on Japanese food and you will find sushi restaurants on every major block. I have tried a few fusion places before, but they’re all typical Chinese mixed cuisines with very familiar flavours. Hapa on the other hand has a nice twist on ingredients which produces very pleasing plates. We ordered the grilled ika (squid), unagi (eel) on tofu with a soya dressing and seaweed on top, ebi (fried shrimp) in a sweet mayo sauce, beef tataki, a stone bowl of rice with vegetables and pork, and their new tuna tartar and avocado salsa with banana chips. The unagi on the cold soft tofu was surprisingly good and refreshing. The tuna and avocado salsa was amazing and was paired very well with banana chips. It is no secret to Vancouverites, Hapa is one of the best fusion Japanese restaurants in Vancouver.
